I got a call from a guy claiming to be from Microsoft. He had an Indian accent. So far, seems authentic, right? He said that my computer was generating errors, and he was going to help me fix it.
He went thru a procedure of having me type ASSOC at a DOS command prompt and look up a number that was supposedly my Windows registration number. He read that to me to "verify" that he was from Microsoft. I was pretty sure that he was trouble at this point, but played along. (It turns out this ClassID is the same on every computer). He sent me to the event viewer to view a bunch of errors. Then he wanted me to type Windows+R and enter a web site www [dot] microsoft [dot] aios [dot] us. This domain is registered to some outfit in New Delhi. DO NOT go there! Don't know what would happen, but I'm sure it's not good.
Microsoft is hard enough to get ahold of if you have a real problem. I can't imagine them calling you.
