Previous serial to USB device (FTDI) worked fine with Logic 9 and my FT-5000D but device was at the netbook usb port. Purchased a USB to RS232 adaptor (Prolific) from West Mountain Radio (with serial section of the cable at the radio side) and I get the above error. Checked com port, etc, no luck. Even though I hit "Ignore", the message keeps coming up and won't let me continue using Logic (why is that?/ pressing help button closes Logic, not my idea of "help"). Operating system is Win 7 Home edition on a ASUS dedicated netbook.

Prolific stuff is just not compatible. You can see if they have a later driver or something, but typically Prolific USB=>RS232 adapters do not work. This problem is well-documented, and not a LOGic problem, and nothing we can do about it. I would check to see if there is an updated driver that might improve things, but not likely. The USB=>RS232 adapters we sell WILL WORK.

Sorry about the non-existant help for the error message. This is a message coming from Windows, and Visual Foxpro tries to call the VFP help file (which we are not allowed to distribute), and all the error would say is that an OLE error occurred or something similar that would be of no help.

Tnx & 73,

Thanks Dennis for the quick reply. I took your advice and found a new driver dated Dec, 2011. I no longer get the error message about the comm device but now I get a timeout message after s few seconds. I see the CAT light on my FT5000 blink but then the error messages shows up Any suggestions?

So far all I have received from West Mountain Radio is an automated resposne that a Tech will review my request.

Hi Chuck:

The new FT-5000 interface is confirmed to work:

Make sure the baud rate etc is correct:

West Mountain Radio finally responded with a program to delete the old prolific drivers and then have you install the new prolific driver dated December 2011. That fixed the problem(s). Given the known problems with the prolific USB/serial adapter, you would think they would have included this information with the adapter instead of making a customer wait two weeks for an answer!
