Is there anyway to change the requirement of 4 letter minimum when searching? For example searching for SWL will not work.

Yes -- not real neat but there is a way.
Search for SWLX. Click Search Google. Google opens in your browser with this search term:
swlx site:http://hosenose.com/Forum
Change it to
swl site:http://hosenose.com/Forum
then click the search button.
