Happy new year to all. We want to thank all of our customers for your continued support.
We have implemented another positive change to issue in the new year. We have been working to obtain an Extended Validation code signing certificate. This will permit us to sign any code that we release, verifying that it is from Personal Database Applications. Obtaining this certificate involved a lot of paperwork and expense. The issuer had to verify our physical address, that we are actually in business, that we are in our state's corporate database, that our claimed phone# is correct, etc. etc. Then they MAILED us the certificate. It is a hardware device that must be plugged into a USB port in order to sign code.
OK, so what? You know and trust us. But your browser does not know or trust us. This is why, when you download an update from an email we send you, or the LOGic demo, it says THIS FILE IS NOT COMMONLY DOWNLOADED. You had to click on MORE and tell it to download anyway. The exact procedure varies from browser to browser. We were getting some calls related to this.
We actually have been signing our code over the past year. We have a Standard Validation certificate. It is relatively easy and inexpensive to obtain. However, it depends on "building a reputation." If enough people download your code and do not complain about it, the browser MIGHT stop warning that the file is not commonly downloaded. It turned out to be a waste of time and money. Other than allowing people to see who the file was from, it served no purpose.
Our certificate arrived Friday. It is installed and working. All updates sent out starting today will be signed. Also, other code such as logic.exe itself will be signed. You can see the signing by right-clicking a .exe or .dll file, and clicking the DIGITAL SIGNATURES tab.
Another installation convenience feature that a few of you have seen already: The Update Subscription installer now has the option to install the new license file only. Use this if you already have LOGic installed. This option is nearly instantaneous, and is guaranteed not to otherwise affect your current installation. Once the new license file is installed, you may install the latest new update from Help/Check for Updates.
This is just the latest in our continued efforts to make LOGic the premier general ham radio logging software.
Happy new year!
